Book spine calculator and guide

Spine width depends on the final page count and the real thickness of the paper. YRV Design’s Cover Designer can calculate it automatically and also lets you enter the exact measurement supplied by your printer.

What you need

Use the final trim size, total page count and paper type. If your printer provides a PPI, caliper or exact spine width, use that value because it takes priority over a generic estimate.

Calculation and verification

When paper is specified in PPI, spine width is derived from the sheet count and equivalent thickness. For production, always compare the result with your provider’s calculator or template, especially after changing paper, binding or page count.

Designing the spine

Keep titles and logos away from folds and risk areas. Very narrow spines are usually better without text. Preflight warns when the spine is too narrow or an element enters its safe-zone risk area.
